Comporium to Add Zipstream 1Gbps Internet Offering for Cable Modem Customers

ROCK HILL, S.C. – August 25, 2020 – Comporium’s cable modem customers wanting access to faster speeds are having that request met with 1Gbps of download speed. The company announced that it is making its Zipstream Gigabit service available to nearly 85,000 cable modem customers between now and the end of 2020. Comporium began the process of increasing speeds for all tiers of its fiber and cable modem customers in June. By the end of the year, over 120,000 customers will have access to higher speeds including 1Gbps download speeds being available for cable modem customers.

Comporium launched Zipstream, its 1Gbps broadband service, in 2014. Until recently, the ultrafast internet tier was only available to customers with a direct fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) connection. During the past few years, the company has been working on several projects to upgrade its core network and its field equipment.

These projects, which began in 2015, involve splitting nodes across Comporium’s service area and rebuilding the company’s core network equipment. Nodes are the switching hubs that connect residences to the network; the more nodes an area has, the better the system’s capacity to provide higher downstream and upstream speeds. Comporium has completed work on over 92% of its nodes and plans to complete the rest by the end of 2020. The rebuild of the company’s core network was completed in April of this year.

Once the node split project is completed, download speeds will increase to:

• 300 Mbps for customers with Comporium’s Standard High-Speed Internet package,
• 600 Mbps for customers with Ultra High-Speed Internet, and
• 750 Mbps for customers with Elite High-Speed Internet.

Customers in neighborhoods where work has been completed saw the new speeds for Standard HSI, Ultra HSI, and Elite HSI beginning June 3, 2020. All customers with cable modem or FTTP service will have access to these speeds, as well as Zipstream, near the end of 2020.

According to Comporium’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Matthew Dosch, the move is another example of how the communications provider is keeping pace with consumer demands. “The internet plays a huge role in our customers’ lives, especially now with the increased demand for remote working and learning,” he said. “The decision to make these improvements was made months ago, illustrating our longstanding commitment to maintaining a reliable, high-performing network for the communities that depend on us.”

Although these are the latest upgrades to the company’s internet infrastructure, they won’t be the last. Plans are already being made for a project to prevent node saturation in Comporium’s North Carolina service territory. That work is scheduled to begin later this year and is a proactive move to reduce the number of homes served per node in the Brevard area. Comporium is also looking at ways to expand and improve its network in Lancaster County, especially near Van Wyck, and in its service area in the South Carolina Midlands.
